SITUATION

Enhancing the user experience in caravans through voice technology, a pioneering project with Jayco integrated voice activated commands using Alexa. This initiative focused on creating a more intuitive and human centred design, emphasising voice user interface (VUI) and voice experience design (VXD).

TASK

The objective was to understand user and business requirements for voice activated technology in caravans. This involved conducting competitor analysis, quantitative and qualitative research, and reviewing existing data sources. The aim was to establish a seamless, human centred voice interaction system that could cater to users with varying levels of tech savviness, particularly focusing on the middle aged to elderly users.

ACTION

During the discovery phase, four key user segments were identified, and personas were developed to guide the voice design. Alexa was chosen for its warmth and friendliness, making technology feel less robotic. The user journey was mapped out, describing scenarios where voice commands would be beneficial.

Sample dialogues were created to illustrate the conversational flow between the user and Alexa, focusing on simplicity and clarity. Key considerations in designing the dialogue included initiation, context, possible actions, feedback, and error recognition and correction.

RESULT

The project evolved into the launch of Australia and the world first voice activated caravan, featuring a user interface that supports simple, clear commands. This approach was particularly effective for users ranging from middle aged to elderly and across varying technology confidence levels, enhancing the overall user experience by making the technology accessible and easy to use. The full research insights demonstrates a significant step forward in integrating voice technology in a way that is intuitive and user friendly to all age groups.

Through my involvement with Jayco on this project, I gained significant experience in VUI and VXD, taking UX processes in a innovative direction focused entirely on voice design. Although bound by an NDA that restricts the publication of full research and insights, the process outlined highlights the importance of creating a user friendly, emotionally engaging voice experience. The selection of Alexa as the voice assistant over others like Google Assistant underscores the project's commitment to a warm, human centred user experience, crucial for making technology accessible to the less tech educated users. This project not only pushed the boundaries of traditional UX design but also set a new standard for voice activated technology in the caravan industry.
