Alexa... Meet Adventure
Designing the world’s first voice activated caravan experience where the open road meets hands free living

Situation
Jayco is one of Australia’s leading caravan manufacturers, embarked on a world first initiative to integrate voice activated functionality into caravans. This project aimed to transform how users interacted with their caravan environment not just adding “smart” features but creating a human centred voice experience that made life on the road easier safer and more enjoyable.
The challenge was unique. Unlike smart homes caravans have variable environments limited connectivity and a diverse user base from middle aged travellers to elderly adventurers often with varying levels of tech confidence. Prior to this project the caravan industry had never deployed voice technology at this scale making it a pioneering opportunity.
Task
I was responsible for the end to end service and product design of the Voice User Interface (VUI) and Voice Experience Design (VXD).
This required:
-
Understanding the user and business requirements for voice technology in a caravan context
-
Conducting competitor analysis of both smart home and in vehicle voice assistants
-
Performing quantitative and qualitative research including interviews and observation of caravan owners
-
Mapping user journeys and creating detailed personas to guide conversational design decisions
-
Aligning technical feasibility with the design vision working closely with Jayco’s product team engineers and Alexa integration specialists
Action
The discovery phase was very important. Four key user segments were identified from tech savvy travellers to those with minimal digital experience. Personas reflected real world challenges such as mobility issues vision impairment remote connectivity limitations and the need for intuitive commands.
Key steps included:
-
Voice first journey mapping to determine the most valuable use cases for hands free commands such as lighting climate control and awning operation
-
Conversational script design focusing on clarity minimal steps and natural speech patterns
-
Dialogue mapping workshops with the engineering team to align command phrasing with system recognition capabilities
-
Selection of Alexa over Google Assistant not only for its warmth and friendliness but also for its integration capabilities multi device compatibility and support for richer contextual conversations
-
Accessibility considerations including short memory friendly commands and need for recall
Sample command flow:
User: “Alexa, turn off the kitchen lights.”
Alexa: “OK. Would you like the bedroom lights off too”
This interaction pattern reduced repetitive steps and made the experience feel conversational instead of mechanical.
Result
The project culminated in the launch of the world’s first voice activated caravan, an achievement that set a new standard in the industry.
The VUI and VXD system allowed for:
-
Seamless hands free operation of key caravan features
-
Increased accessibility for older and mobility limited users
-
Reduced learning curve with intuitive commands requiring little to no training
The integration of Alexa created an emotionally engaging humanised interaction that made the technology feel like a helpful travel companion rather than a technical hurdle.
Conclusion
Although bound by NDA restrictions on specific technical details and full research insights, the process highlights how deep UX research, service design thinking and close collaboration between product, engineering and voice technology specialists can transform a niche market product into an industry leading innovation.
This project pushed the boundaries of traditional UX design, set a new standard for voice activated technology in the caravan industry, proving that well executed voice experience design can transform even the most traditional spaces into intuitive, accessible, human centred experiences.
